Equations describe supervised school chemistry. Do not perform chemical experiments at home.
States: (s) solid, (l) liquid, (g) gas, (aq) dissolved in water. Add states when known or requested. Conditions below each entry are part of its meaning.
Combination: several reactants, one product. Decomposition: one reactant breaks down. Displacement: a more reactive element replaces another. Double displacement: ions exchange partners; a precipitate may form.
Oxidation: oxygen gained or hydrogen lost. Reduction: oxygen lost or hydrogen gained. Exothermic releases heat; endothermic absorbs energy. These labels can overlap.
Recall order for common metals: K > Na > Ca > Mg > Al > Zn > Fe > Pb > H > Cu > Hg > Ag > Au.
Gas clues: H₂ gives a pop; CO₂ turns limewater milky; O₂ relights a glowing splint. Bubbles alone do not identify a gas.
Corrosion: iron rusts in moist air; rust is hydrated iron(III) oxide with variable water content. Copper develops a green basic-carbonate coating; silver tarnishes due to sulphide formation. Painting, oiling and galvanising can protect iron. Rancidity is oxidation of fats/oils; airtight storage and antioxidants slow it.

Page 04 · Reaction 01 · Chemical Reactions and Equations
The reactants form a combined product. A hydration or crystallisation entry also includes water in the resulting structure. Concept schematic; not a practical apparatus drawing.
Condition: Ignition in air
Observation: Bright white light; white magnesium oxide powder.
Type: Combination; exothermic; oxidation
Avoid this mistake: Clean oxide coating before burning; do not alter MgO to balance oxygen.

The reactants form a combined product. A hydration or crystallisation entry also includes water in the resulting structure. Concept schematic; not a practical apparatus drawing.
Condition: Add water to quicklime
Observation: Heat is released; slaked lime forms.
Type: Combination; exothermic
Avoid this mistake: CaO is quicklime; Ca(OH)2 is slaked lime.
Page 04 · Reaction 03 · Chemical Reactions and Equations
A substance breaks down into simpler products. Read the condition to identify heat, light or electricity as the driving energy. Concept schematic; not a practical apparatus drawing.
Condition: Strong heating
Observation: Carbon dioxide evolves; quicklime remains.
Type: Thermal decomposition
Avoid this mistake: Heat belongs above the arrow, not as a chemical formula.

A substance breaks down into simpler products. Read the condition to identify heat, light or electricity as the driving energy. Concept schematic; not a practical apparatus drawing.
Condition: Heat anhydrous ferrous sulphate
Observation: Brown iron(III) oxide remains; sulphur oxides evolve.
Type: Thermal decomposition
Avoid this mistake: Hydrated green crystals first lose water; this equation describes the anhydrous salt.
Selected equations and school-level representations for CBSE Class 10 revision. Conditions and observations must be read with each equation. The guide is independently written; it is not an official CBSE publication or a guaranteed exam-question list.
